Socrates

Socrates wrote nothing. What survives of him is other people's record — chiefly Plato's dialogues — of a man who cross-examined Athenians about the things they were most certain of, and who was tried and executed for it in 399 BCE. He is here as the patron of the site's own procedure rather than of any doctrine: the claim attributed to him is that knowing you do not know is a better position than a confident answer you cannot defend.
