Questions worth keeping open

What are we no longer forced to ask?

Our tools can answer almost anything we know how to put into words. Some questions stop being asked when that happens — not because we settled them, but because nothing forces us to raise them any more. This site keeps them in one place, with the ideas and sources around each one, and answers none of them.

What is Unfinished?

Unfinished is not a blog, and it isn't building toward a conclusion. Each question here comes with the claims that bear on it, the people who hold those claims, the sources they're drawn from, and the other questions it opens or argues against — connected the way an argument is, not filed the way a post is. The site answers none of its own questions, and it never will.

Four questions with the most already built around them: a claim to test, a source to check, a counter-question waiting.

How a question page works

Every question on the site is built from the same parts, in the same order.

  1. 01

    The question

Stated plainly, with the context that made it worth asking.

  2. 02

    Why it matters

What is at stake in asking it, and what changes if nobody does.

  3. 03

    Ideas

The claims and positions that bear on it, each attributed to whoever holds it.

  4. 04

    People

The thinkers behind those claims, and the traditions they argue from.

  5. 05

    Sources

Where each claim actually comes from, cited by name.

  6. 06

    Counter-questions

The questions it opens, and the ones that pull against it.

  7. 07

    Paths

Guided walks that carry the question into a longer argument.

The questions

Grouped by area of enquiry. Open any one of them to see why it is worth asking and what it connects to — the ideas behind it, the questions it pulls against, the sources it came from.

Longer reads

Two slower ways through the same material: a piece of writing that follows one line of argument from question to question, and a guided path that walks a set of ideas in order.

When the Answer Becomes Cheaper Than the Question

A path from a missing prompt detail to the question we stop asking

Guided path

The site's central argument, walked end to end: from the questions a good tool lets you skip, through the objection that most of them were worth skipping.

There are two other ways through. The map shows every question and how they connect. The index is a plain list of everything here, filterable by area.
