What do I actually know?

A question about the gap between feeling confident and having grounds for confidence.

Epistemic · Assumption check

About the difference between a belief that feels settled and a belief that has actually been checked against something outside itself.

Why it matters

Most of what anyone counts as knowledge was acquired on someone else's authority and has never been checked. That is not a scandal — no one can check everything — but the difference between a belief that has been tested and one that merely feels settled is invisible from inside, and only the question makes it visible.
