Institution

A durable social structure — organization, rule, or norm — that persists across the individuals who make it up.

Source

An institution, in the social-science sense, is a stable, valued, and recurring pattern of behavior or an organization that persists beyond the individuals occupying it at any given time.

Interpretation

This project is interested in institutions as carriers of memory — as structures that can encode the lessons of past failures long after those failures are individually remembered.

Caution

Institutions vary enormously in scale and kind; claims here are meant to apply narrowly, not as a general theory of institutions.
