Institutional memory is the collective body of facts, norms, and procedures an organization retains from its history, often held by long-tenured people rather than written documentation.
Interpretation
This project is interested in institutional memory as a form of distributed, informal verification — a record of what has already failed, and why a given rule exists.
Caution
Institutional memory can also preserve outdated or unjustified rules simply because no one remembers why they could be changed.
