Friction

The effortful, sometimes slow resistance a task offers, as distinct from its outright difficulty.

Skill

Source

Friction, used metaphorically here, is the resistance a process or task offers to being completed quickly or effortlessly.

Interpretation

This project is interested in friction as a possible mechanism for building judgment: some resistance in a task may be exactly what forces the attention and repetition that produce skill.

Caution

Not all friction is productive; some is simply waste. This project will try to distinguish the two rather than romanticize difficulty.
